Reduce Ammonia Emissions
In the JHacidificationNH4+ system sulfuric acid is added to slurry to reduce the pH from about 7 to 5-6. When the pH value of the slurry is lowered, ammonia NH3 is converted to ammonium NH4+. Ammonium NH4+ does not evaporate but stays in the slurry as plant available-N. The treatment reduces ammonia evaporation by up to 50 % on a cow farm and that is:
- From the Stable
- During Slurry Storage
- During Application of Slurry to Fields
Sulfuric acid tank
The JH NH4 + system consists of an acid tank and a pump sump, where slurry is mixed with sulfuric acid. The plant is connected by pipes to the existing stalls and the slurry storage tank on the farm. The acid tank is placed on a concrete foundation and bollards are concreted to avoid collisions.
Slurry is automatically pumped directly from the stable into the sump and mixed with sulfuric acid from the tank. The treated slurry is then pumped both in the slurry storage tank and back to the stables to also eliminate ammonia evaporation here.
The treated slurry can be distributed directly from the slurry storage tank in fields and can increase agricultural output by up to 15%, because fertilizer value is also improved.
Safety and Function
The safety and function of the plant has already been fully tested. 2011-2012 the system was tested by the Institute VERA (Verification of Environmental Technologies for Agricultural Production). VERA was established in 2008 in collaboration between the Danish, Dutch and German environmental and agricultural authorities. The environmental efficiency and operational stability of a range of environmental technologies for livestock production have been tested according to the VERA protocols, including the JHacidificationNH4+ plants for cattle and pigs.
√ Reduction of ammonia evaporation up to 50 %
√ No limit on protein content of the feed
√ Increased fertilizer value of manure
√ Rise in agricultural output up to 15 %
√ No need to incorporate slurry into grass fields
√ Minimum manganese deficiency
√ Less ammonia in the stable air to benefit animal and human health
√ Contributes to the profit of the owner
√ Slurry is more homogeneous and easier to handle
The acid tank is placed on a concrete foundation and bollards are concreted to avoid collisions with the tank.
A flow meter registers the annual manure production and the exact acid consumption per m3 slurry.
The pH value is controlled by pH sensors and acid is automatically dosed and mixed into the slurry.
